Well footy fans, we are closely approaching that time of year when every team has played every other team at least once.
It’s safe to say that after Round 15 you get a pretty good impression of how the first weekend in September will shape up. Rather than speculate on who will be there on Qualifying Final Weekend, let’s take a look at the players that have starred in Season ‘07 thus far. As we all know, the Brownlow has become an award for the leagues prestige midfielders, so let’s make sure that a few forwards and backmen get a guernsey.
1. Chris Judd How can you go past the leagues elite player? He’s not even 24, yet he already sports a Brownlow, a Premiership medallion, 2 All-Aust honours and a Norm Smith Medal!
He is invaluable to his team’s structure, as shown in the Eagles shock loss to the Saints during the split round. If he isn’t already a mega-star, imagine how big he’d be if he ever decided to come back to his home state and play for Collingwood or the Bombers!
2. Chad Cornes In the old days of footy cards - this guy would have been called a ‘utility player’. Is there a position on the ground that he can’t hold down? Whether he is close checking the opposition’s top forward or running around in the centre collecting possession after possession - his disposal is second to none.
When he lifts - his whole team follows. The big question is - what position does he get in this years All-Australian Team? Can you name him twice in the same team?
3. Jimmy Bartell Underrated - underrated -Â underrated! Needs to be mentioned along with the likes of Kerr, Goodwin and Dal Santo. He is a quality midfielder whose success has mirrored his teams.
4. Gary Ablett Jnr This guy is emerging as a super star. Collects the big touches in the centre of the ground and often drifts forward to kick an inspirational goal. It’s not long till he and his brother come to the party on the same afternoon. Wonder if that might be a Saturday in September?
5. Matthew Pavlich Always dangerous and looks to take the honors away from Fevola as the leagues best power forward. Contrary to Grant Thomas’ beliefs, his second efforts inspire the team that he captains. Leads by example and could not possibly leave anyone (other than Grant) second guessing his commitment.
6. Heath Shaw An AFL quarter back. In the absence of James Clement, Shaw has become the Pies key play maker from defense. Can hold down a top quality opponent has he racks up 20 odd telling possesions himself. Collingwood would be wrapped that they re-signed him this week.
7. Brad Sewell Who is this guy? A tagger that needs to be tagged. Completely accountable and even more reliable. Slots in perfectly with the Hawks quality midfield brigade.
8. Dustin Fletcher Everything old is new again! Okay, so sometimes he doesn’t get an opponent, but lets admit that he uses every second of the game as if it is his last. He’s led the leagues kicking stats for most of the year and the addition of Mal to the backline has only helped his ability to influence a game from the last line of defense.
9. Lindsay Gilbee Enjoys a similar ‘quarter back’ role to Heath Shaw. An extremely offensive player for a backmen. His foot skills are sublime! When West and Cross eventually retire - just imagine what he’ll be like when given a decent run in the middle!
10. Buddy Franklin He has only turned it on a couple of times this year - but boy when he does! One of the leagues most difficult players to match up on. His goal sense is uncanny, particularly for a man of his size - mind you he hasn’t been a ‘man’ for that long. He’s only 20 years old!
Imagine what he’ll be like after a couple of finals under his belt.

Hey - nice summation Paul!
I think it’s a pretty good list - only one change for me:
I’d have Sam Mitchell in there…
and pssst… only one ‘L’ in ‘Bartel’ (I think)!
